CNN talks to investigative journalist Seymour Hersch about his recent piece for the London Review of Books claiming President Obama lied about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden was shot and killed in a raid four years ago.
The U.S. has claimed the raid was done without the knowledge (and against the wishes) of Pakistan. Hersh says this is not the case and that Pakistani officials played a key role in helping the U.S. find and attack bin Laden. Hersh also claims there was no “firefight” and that bin Laden was unarmed. The U.S. claimed it located bin Laden by tracking his personal messenger.
In the article, Hersh cites interviews with “a retired senior intelligence official” and American sources who “had access to corroborating information,” according to Slate.
But Hersh reports a former Pakistani intelligence officer identified his whereabouts in return for the bulk of a $25 million U.S. bounty. Pakistani intelligence was reportedly aware of Bin Laden’s location and held him “prisoner” at the Abbottabad compound since 2006.
