According to Raw Story, a woman in Sacramento, CA, was shocked to find a dark-skinned figurine with a slave collar as part of a toy pirate ship set given to her 5-year-old child.
Ida Lockett said her son got the Playmobil pirate ship as a gift for his birthday. She didn’t notice anything was wrong until she started helping him put it together.
She then found the dark-skinned character that had no shoes, tattered-looking clothes and a slave collar around its neck, CBS13 reports.
“It’s definitely racist,” Lockett told CBS News. “It told my son to put a slave cuff around the black character’s neck, and then to play with the toy.” The ship reportedly has a built-in dungeon area, too, according to Raw Story.
The local NAACP is demanding action.
“This is deplorable; this cannot be accepted, and it needs to be pulled off the shelf,” said the Sacramento NAACP president Stephen Webb to CBS.
