According to a 2014 study by the medical publication The Lancet, more than 1.2 million veterans were without health insurance in 2012, the latest year for which data was available.

The study used numbers from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

Al Jazeera writes that the study claims that roughly 8.9 million out of the 22 million veterans in the U.S. are enrolled in VA health benefits.
