Was the mass shooting in San Bernardino workplace violence or terrorism?
To answer that, we must first see if those who were killed worked with shooter Syed Farook or his wife, Tashfeen Malik.
“Farook, an American citizen, was an environmental health specialist with the San Bernardino County health department, which was hosting the holiday party at the Inland Regional Center where the attack took place.
“He had been there five years. Records list a man with his name and title who worked at the agency…”
The British news source The Independent states:
“Authorities say the heavily armed couple opened fire on Farook’s co-workers from the county Environmental Health Department during a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center social services agency in San Bernardino, about 60 miles (100 km) east of Los Angeles.”
The LA Times reports:
“Farook and Malik allegedly opened fire on a holiday party being held at the center for the San Bernardino County Public Health Department.
“Farook, who had worked for the department for five years, left the party ‘under some circumstances that were described as angry,’ San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.”
Burguan identified two suspects as Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, who were married. Farook was reportedly an employee of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, which rented a conference room at the social services center in which the shooting took place on Wednesday.
Vox also states:
Marybeth Feild, president and CEO of the Inland Regional Center, which serves people with developmental disabilities, told the Associated Press that the initial shooting took place at a conference room at the center, which was rented out by the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health for a holiday gathering. And at least one of the suspects was an employee for the county health department.
So, it seems clear that the people killed worked with the man, Syed Farook.
Were their guns purchased in the U.S. or abroad?
The guns were purchased legally three years ago, the Los Angeles Times reports. It’s not clear how Farook and his wife obtained the weapons.
Heavy.com also reports that they had two pistols that were purchased legally, one at a shop called “Annie’s Get Your Gun” in the San Bernardino, California area.
Was Farook born in the Middle East?
“Farook was born in Illinois, and had worked at the Health Department as an inspector for five years. Malik was born in Pakistan, according to a federal law enforcement source,” states The LA Times.
Many sources state that Tashfeen Malik pledged support for ISIS on Facebook, but this post can no longer be found.
