Is Argentina In The Midst Of A Full-Blown Meltdown?

FeaturedImage_2015-02-03_093230_YouTube_Alberto_Nisman

Recently, The Week wrote an article entitled “Argentina is in the Midst of a Full-Blown Meltdown.”  Lets’s take a look at the situation.

In January, Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman, 51, made accusations that top Argentine officials, including President Fernandez de Kirchner, had conspired with Iran to cover up responsibility for a 1994 bombing of a Jewish center.  That bombing killed 85 people and injured hundreds.

Nisman claimed the bombing was part of a deal that would supply Iranian oil to Argentina.

Mr. Nisman’s body was discovered on January 18th of this year at his home.  It was the day before he was to testify before lawmakers about those accusations.  His door on the 13th floor had been locked from the inside, and a gun with a spent cartridge was found on the floor near his body. There was no suicide note, though it had the appearance of a suicide.

Mr. Nisman had drafted a warrant for the arrest of Argentina’s president – Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner – and had accused her of trying to shield Iranian officials from responsibility in the 1994 bombing, the lead investigator into his death said.

In February, a few days before a speech given by the president, a federal judge, Daniel Rafecas, threw out allegations that Ms. Fernández de Kirchner and her officials had obstructed an investigation into the terror attack, states the Economist.

Recently, the BBC reported that the family of the deceased Argentine prosecutor Nisman had independent tests conducted that show that Nisman was murdered, according to family members.

At a news conference, Mr Nisman’s ex-wife said the findings ruled out theories of accident or suicide.

Sandra Arroyo Salgado, Mr Nisman’s ex-wife, said a team of experts had made their conclusions based on reports from a post-mortem examination and forensic evidence.

Ms Arroyo Salgado, who is also a federal judge, added that her report was at “the disposal of the prosecutor and judge” involved with the official investigation into Mr. Nisman’s death, states the BBC.

Despite telling journalists the report’s conclusions, Arroyo Salgado has not released the full details of the document.

The family report concludes:

1.)  There were no spasms in Mr Nisman’s right hand, suggesting he had not shot himself

2.)  Additionally, no gunpowder residue was found on his hands

3.)  The prosecutor had been shot in the back of the head

4.)  Mr Nisman’s body had been moved to the bathroom once he was shot

5.)  The prosecutor was apparently not drunk at the time

Tom Schweich’s Suicide Exposes Bigotry: MSNBC

MSNBC

Thomas A. “Tom” Schweich (October 2, 1960 – February 26, 2015) served as State Auditor of Missouri and was a member of the Republican Party. He was previously given the rank of Ambassador by President George W. Bush, according to Wikipedia.

In 2015, Schweich announced he would run for Governor of Missouri in the 2016 election.  He committed suicide on February 26, 2015.  He died from a gunshot wound, according to Wikipedia.

Former U.S. Sen. John Danforth denounced the ugly nature of American politics Tuesday while eulogizing Missouri Auditor and potential gubernatorial candidate Tom Schweich. He suggested that political bullying and an anti-Semitic “whisper campaign” led his friend to kill himself, according to the AP.

Danforth expressed “overwhelming anger that politics has gone so hideously wrong” as he spoke at a memorial service that drew many of Missouri’s elected officials and hundreds of others to the Episcopal church that Schweich had attended in suburban St. Louis.

Schweich had been “accused” of being Jewish by fellow politicians, and he had been talking to several people about it just prior to his suicide.

Is there anti-semitism in Missouri?

Who Is ‘J Street?’

J Street is an advocacy group based in the United States whose aim is to promote American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and Israel-Palestinian conflicts peacefully and diplomatically. It was founded in April 2008.

J Street states that it “supports a new direction for American policy in the Middle East – diplomatic solutions over military ones”, “multilateral over unilateral approaches to conflict resolution”; and “dialogue over confrontation” with wider international support.

J Street describes itself as a pro-Israel organization which supports peace between Israel and its neighbors.

Wkipedia:  “…the organization seeks to provide a political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans who believe that a ‘two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is essential to Israel’s survival as the national home of the Jewish people and as a vibrant democracy.'”

Recently, The Anti-Defamation League blasted the “left-wing lobby group” J Street for running an “inflammatory and repugnant” campaign against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Algemeiner:  “Though it calls itself a ‘pro-Israel, pro-peace’ group, J Street has actively lobbied against sanctions on the Iranian regime, devoting its energies to attacking Netanyahu almost exclusively. Its latest petition campaign, around the slogan ‘Israel’s Prime Minister is not the spokesman for all Jews,’ is directed at Netanyahu’s forthcoming speech to the US Congress on the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions.”

“At the height of the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled speech to Congress, J Street’s petition campaign that attempts to distance itself and American Jews from Israel’s duly elected prime minister is inflammatory and repugnant,” ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said in a statement. “It exacerbates an already heated and politicized moment for U.S. Israel relations at a critical juncture in the West’s negotiations with Iran.”

The newspaper The Algemeiner calls J Street a “left-wing Jewish organization.”

In other words, J Street is a pro-peace Jewish organization that does not agree with everything Netanyahu does.

Foxman’s condemnation of J Street comes shortly after the ADL chief himself said that Netanyahu’s speech to Congress should be scrapped, arguing that the invitation to the Israeli prime minister extended by House Speaker John Boehner “looks like a political challenge to the White House.”

Jewish Community Calls For Boycott Over Village’s Hitler Sign

A village in the U.K. has angered the Jewish community after agreeing to reinstate a sign saying “Hitler’s Walk.”

The sign for a park overlooking Mevagissey village was taken down by the now-defunct Restormel Council in 2005 after complaints that it was inappropriate.

Now Mevagissey Parish Council has ordered a new sign for the park.  They say that that is what local people call the park, according to the BBC.

Harvey Kurzfield, of Kehillat Kernow, which represents the Jewish community of Cornwall, said the sign was “outrageous”.

The park, on a sloping area a little smaller than a soccer field at the top of an place called Polkirt Hill, was named in the 1930s after a dictatorial local councilor, who was nicknamed “Hitler.”

House GOP Leader Once Addressed White Supremacists

A House GOP leader has acknowledged that he once addressed a gathering of white supremacists, though his office denies any association with the group’s social views.

Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise, Cathy McMorris Rodgers

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the chamber’s third-ranking Republican, served in the Louisiana Legislature when he appeared in 2002 at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO).

The group was founded by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, and the Southern Poverty Law Center has classified the group as a hate group.

In a written statement, Scalise aide Moira Bagley Smith confirmed that Scalise addressed the group as it gathered at a hotel near the neighborhoods that both Scalise and Duke represented during separate terms as state lawmakers.
