New York Times Columnist Charles Blow / Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, Views On Poverty

Secular Talk

Recently, New York Times columnist Charles Blow quoted the president speaking at Georgetown University about the poor:

“And I think the effort to suggest that the poor are sponges, leeches, don’t want to work, are lazy, are undeserving, got traction,” said the President.

“And, look, it’s still being propagated. I mean, I have to say that if you watch Fox News on a regular basis, it is a constant menu — they will find folks who make me mad. I don’t know where they find them. [Laughter.] They’re like, I don’t want to work, I just want a free Obama phone [laughter]…”

The columnist also criticized Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly for calling poor people “lazy.”

O’Reilly then gave his opinion of Blow’s column on his TV show The O’Reilly Factor.

Below is a quote from Media Matters that was cited by Blow in his column. Media Matters states the quote is from 2004 from O’Reilly’s radio show The Radio Factor.

O’Reilly: “Reagan was not a confrontational guy, didn’t like confrontation, much rather be your pal … doesn’t want to get involved with the really nasty stuff, the tough stuff, and that’s what racial politics is — nasty and tough. … It’s hard to do it because you gotta look people in the eye and tell ’em they’re irresponsible and lazy. And who’s gonna wanna do that? Because that’s what poverty is, ladies and gentlemen.”

Are poor people lazy? What about the “working poor?” Are people who work full-time for low wages lazy? Are there times – during an economic downturn, for example – when people are forced to accept low wages?

Prior To Execution, Texas Man Convicted Of Killing Three Says ‘I’m Ready To Go Home’

Derrick Dewayne Charles, 32, was executed on Tuesday for the slayings of Myiesha Bennett, her mother, Brenda Bennett, 44, and her grandfather, Obie Bennett, 77, in Houston in July 2002

Triple murderer Derrick Charles was asked if he wanted to make a final statement before being executed only to reply “Nah I’m ready to go home.”

The Texas inmate has been executed for the killings of his 15-year-old girlfriend, her mother and her grandfather nearly 13 years ago in Houston.

Derrick Dewayne Charles, 32, was put to death this year in the nation’s most active capital punishment state on Tuesday.  He was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. Central Standard Time, 25 minutes after being given the execution drug, writes The U.K. Daily Mail.

He was put to death after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to rule that he was mentally incompetent.

“He was the seventh person put to death in Texas this year, at a time when lethal injections are on hold in several states around the nation,” writes the Mirror.

New York Representative Had Change Of Heart On Netanyahu, Attended Speech

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., explains to MSNBC why he decided to attend PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech after initially indicating he would not.

Mr. Rangel had previously slammed the protocol behind the invitation to the speech—a letter inviting Mr. Netanyahu supposedly included Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s name, even though she was not party to the invite, and the invite comes as Mr. Netanyahu faces re-election back home.

Was it political?

What is a “conjugal visit” in prison?

Wikipedia: “A conjugal visit is a scheduled period in which an inmate of a prison or jail is permitted to spend several hours or days in private with a visitor, usually his/her legal spouse. The parties may engage in sexual intercourse. The generally recognized basis for permitting such visits in modern times is to preserve family bonds and increase the chances of success for a prisoner’s eventual return to life after release from prison. Additionally, they serve as an incentive to motivate inmates to comply with the various day-to-day rules and regulations of the prison, and to avoid any infringement which might disqualify them from having a conjugal visit.”

GOP Warns Iranian Nukes May Hit US Cities: Are They Serious?

A week ago, three presidential candidates talked to a roomful of wealthy donors at the Koch Brothers’ American Recovery Policy Forum in Palm Springs, California. The discussion underscored disagreement within the GOP over global affairs and national security.

Republican Sens. Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul took part in a largely friendly, but occasionally fiery, panel at the event sponsored by Charles and David Koch.

The event was moderated by ABC’s Jonathan Karl, and marked the first time potential GOP contenders gathered on the same stage at the same time to talk about policy in 2015, a year that’s expected to see several candidates compete for the Republican nomination.

Koch Brother Wants To Reform Justice System After He Faced Charges

TYT video.

According to Politico, Charles Koch, known for his support of libertarian and Republican causes, is opening his wallet on an unexpected issue.

According to a story published Sunday by The Wichita Eagle, Koch plans to increase his efforts for criminal justice reform.

“Over the next year, we are going to be pushing the issues key to this, which need a lot of work in this country,” Koch said, according to the paper.

“And that would be freedom of speech, cronyism and how that relates to opportunities for the disadvantaged.”

Koch added that changes are needed, “especially for the disadvantaged,” whom he said feel the impact the most. He also cited the need to reform criminal sentences, which he said need to be “more appropriate to the crime that has been committed.”
