Activists Crowdfund for Homeless LGBT Youth

As a response to the $842,000 raised for the anti-gay owners of Memories Pizza in Indiana, progressive activists are crowdfunding to support homeless LGBT youth, according to rhrealitycheck.org.

A campaign named #Pizza4Equality has raised more than $100,000 in just four days to benefit Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund, a national advocacy organization for homeless youth who are LGBT.

On the local level, another fundraising campaign has received more than $30,000 for Indiana Youth Group, which has provided safe spaces and support for LGBT youth in Indiana since 1987.

Homeless Person Donates To Church

An envelope with 18 cents inside was left as an offering at a Charlotte, North Carolina, church last Sunday, according to The Huffington Post.

Church members say they were deeply moved by the “powerful” gift.

“Please don’t be mad, I don’t have much,” someone wrote on the outside of the envelope, left in a collection plate at First United Methodist Church. “I’m homeless. God Bless.”

Alaskan Congressman Don Young Says Wolves Could Solve Homelessness

Rep. Don Young of Alaska suggested this week that wolves might be a way to solve homelessness, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Young, a Republican, was speaking during a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on Thursday and objecting to members of Congress asking for the gray wolf to be a protected species, according to The Washington Post.

“…(W)e get 79 congressmen sending you a letter, they haven’t got a damn wolf in their whole district,” he said, supposedly aiming his comments at Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

“I’d like to introduce them in your district,” Young stated.  “I’d introduce them to your district and you wouldn’t have a homeless problem anymore.”

Young also once said to a political opponent during a political campaign, “The last guy who touched me ended up on the ground dead.’”  The website CQ Roll Call asked him about it, to which he responded, “There’s some truth to that.”

There was another incident where Congressman Young grabbed the hand of a congressional staffer at the Capitol who was in charge of watching the entrance.  It wasn’t protocol for anyone to be let in the entrance.  After squeezing his hand for several moments, Young let go and walked through the entrance.

Library Helps The Homeless

Hedberg Public Library staff in Janesville, Wisconsin, is serious about its mission to serve all residents, including those who are homeless, according to the GazetteXtra.

The staff provide a safe daytime haven so long as everybody follows the rules by respecting others’ rights and the library itself, said Michelle Dennis, circulation director of the library.

“We are very clear about the expectations of behavior for everybody who uses the library, and we try to restrict or limit people’s access only if their behavior warrants that,” said Dennis.

On most days, about a dozen homeless people use the services.

Thursday was a particularly nasty day with its mix of cold and snow, and winter clothing piled on a corner chair served as home base for a homeless man who spends his days at the library.  He is welcome at the library, and volunteers heat his lunch in the ground level coffee shop, said Bryan McCormick, library director.

Sometimes, someone just wants a quiet place to sit, Dennis said. Other times, they need resource materials.

The ground floor coffee shop is a popular place to hang out, along with a stretch of windows along the Rock River or in the lobby near the elevators.

Homeless people typically don’t create problems, especially since GIFTS (God Is Faithful Temporary Shelter) Men’s Shelter opened in Janesville, said Dennis.

GIFTS rotates nightly shelters for men between churches during the cold months. In November—the latest figures available—GIFTS served 51 guests with 727 shelter nights.

When GIFTS is at capacity, staff arranges sleeping elsewhere, such as in Madison or Walworth County shelters.

2 Albuquerque Police Officers Charged With Murder

MSNBC

Sources state that two Albuquerque police officers were charged with murder Monday in the shooting death of a knife-wielding homeless man that led to violent protests and brought new scrutiny to the police department amid a federal investigation.

The decision to bring murder charges occurred at a time when police tactics are under intense review nationwide, fueled by the fatal shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old in Ferguson, Missouri, and the chokehold death of another unarmed man in New York City. Grand juries declined to charge officers in those cases, leading to large protests.

The Albuquerque District Attorney discusses it with Lawrence O’Donnell.
