Unarmed Man Shot In Baltimore Suburb

Baltimore County police officers shot and killed an unarmed man in Baltimore suburb of Owings Mills early Thursday, writes the Baltimore Sun. The Herald-Standard claimed that the man was going to commit suicide.

The police were responding to a report of domestic violence at a home they had visited more than a dozen times over the past three years.

Spencer Lee McCain, 41, died about 8 a.m. at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, police said.

The Herald-Standard:

“An unarmed black man killed by Baltimore County police told his girlfriend’s mother that he was going to commit suicide as officers were on their way to his home after reports of domestic violence, the mother said Thursday.”

Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson said officers believed McCain was armed. However, they did not find a weapon on him, writes the Baltimore Sun.

Police received a 911 call about a possible domestic disturbance at the condominium in the 3000 block of Hunting Ridge Drive in Owings Mills shortly after 1 a.m., Johnson said. He said a 10-year-old child who lived at the home called a grandmother, who dialed 911.

He said the first officer to arrive knew of a history of domestic violence calls at the home. Since 2012, police said, officers responded to 911 calls for the address 17 times, including several reports of fighting.

Authorities say a 53-year-old man survived after jumping off the arch of a Missouri River bridge into the water below.  The drop was an estimated 130ft.

South Sioux City Police Sgt. Chris Chernock says the man climbed to the top of the arch around 6:30 p.m. Monday on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. NYPD Officer Shot

NYPD officer shooting

A New York City police officer was shot in the head Saturday night, states the Associated Press.  The man accused of shooting the officer will be arraigned Sunday on charges including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, officials said.

No evidence has been given that the shooting was related to protests or riots.

Demetrius Blackwell was arrested Saturday night in the shooting of Officer Brian Moore, who remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The AP:  “Bratton said Blackwell has a criminal record that includes a weapons possession charge, but the suspect made no such anti-police postings and was being pursued by the anti-crime officers because of his behavior.”

Blackwell, 35, was expected to be arraigned Sunday afternoon, the Queens district attorney’s office said. It was not clear if he had a lawyer.

CNN: Grand Jury Won’t Indict Officers In Dallas Shooting

Secular Talk

Two Dallas officers who shot a schizophrenic, bipolar man holding a screwdriver within 20 seconds of arriving at his family’s doorstep last June will not be indicted, according to CNN and ThinkProgress.

Officers John Rogers and Andrew Hutchins shot Jason Harrison, 38, who suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, after they ordered him to drop the screwdriver, states Al-Jazeera.

“The family is obviously severely disappointed,” said attorney Geoff Henley.  Henley is representing Harrison’s family in a federal civil-rights lawsuit that was filed last October, states Al-Jazeera.  Henley also said,  “…(T)his isn’t going to affect our case. We’ll continue to move forward.”

1200-Pound Man Lifted From Nusing Home With A Crane

Nursing home patient Robert Butler, who weighs close to 1,200 pounds, was moved from the financially strapped Bannister Nursing Home in Rhode Island with a crane Sunday afternoon.

Robert Butler

Target 12 TV news channel reported on it Friday.  A crane company first conducted a site survey at the nursing home in order to determine where the crane should be located to help safely move Mr. Butler.

Then, Providence firefighters from the Special Hazards Unit cut an opening to Butler’s nursing home room door to make it bigger.

Firefighters built a ramp that then helped them move Butler to a deck in the four-story building.

From there, he was placed in a medically equipped, metal container that was lifted with a crane from the deck, down to a flatbed truck.

Bizarre: Man Hits Child In Car, Stops To Help, Gets Shot

Milwaukee two shot dead after road accident

A motorist who knocked down and killed a two-year-old girl in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been shot dead after stopping to help at the scene of the accident.

A gunman, apparently enraged that a van had struck a 2-year-old boy Sunday in Milwaukee, not only “assassinated” the driver of the van – in the words of Mayor Tom Barrett – but also shot the toddler’s 15-year-old brother, who had rushed to the scene.  The 15-year-old boy, who was not in the vehicle, was shot in the shoulder and later died in hospital.

The accident happened on Sunday at 5:10pm after the child ran into the street and was hit by a van.

Rasheed T. Chiles, 15, had been attending a party at a nearby house with his brother, 2-year-old Damani T. Terry.  Damani was hit by the van.

Archie Brown Jr., 40, was driving the van about 5:10 p.m. Sunday in the 4600 block of N. 48th St., near Wahl Park in Milwaukee when he hit Damani, who had run into the road, according to Milwaukee police.

Brown immediately jumped out and was reportedly grieving and upset as he stood over the body.

Police have said there were no suspects in custody.  Milwaukee police continued on Monday to work on identifying the shooting suspect.

In the late afternoon, Attorney Michael Hupy offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot Brown.  An upset Hupy said it was the fourth time ever he has offered a reward in a murder case.

Police Captain Timothy Heier said the 41-year-old driver remained at the scene to help and was then shot along with the teenager, who was not a passenger.

Sky News reports the driver was 41, whereas The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel states he was 40.

The driver was identified by his father.  Archie Brown, Sr. said his son was the father of four daughters, including one who was six months old.

Here is a video of the fatal police shooting of Lavall Hall in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The dash-cam footage was released on April 9th by the family of the 25-year-old Hall, who was a mentally ill man shot and killed by police officer Eddo Trimino in February. The officer can be heard shouting, “Get on the f***ing ground or you’re dead!” before firing five times.

The Miami Herald reports that the shooting occurred February 15th, after police were called to Hall’s home by his mother, who found him standing outside nearly naked and waving a broomstick. According to CBS Miami, Hall’s mother, Catherine Daniels, told officers that her son was diagnosed schizophrenic.

The shooting occurs at roughly the 0:54 mark in the video.

America’s Longest-Serving Innocent Prisoner Receives $1 Million For 39 Years In Jail

An Ohio man who spent 39 years in prison for a murder that he did not commit will receive more than $1 million in compensation from the state of Ohio for his wrongful imprisonment, states The Telegraph.

Ricky Jackson, who was only saved from execution by a paperwork error, served the longest known sentence of any American who was subsequently found to have been wrongfully convicted.

“Wow, wow, wow, that’s fantastic, man,” Mr Jackson, 58, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper when he was told that he would receive the million-dollar payment following an order from the Ohio court of claims.

“This is going to mean so much.”

Jackson was 19 when he and two friends were sentenced to death row in 1975 for the murder of Harold Franks, a money order salesman, near a corner store in Cleveland.

He and the two brothers were convicted on the basis of the testimony of a 13-year-old boy who said that he witnessed the killing of Franks.

The boy, Eddie Vernon, was on a school bus a block away with other children at the time.

He later recanted his account as an adult.   However, no other witnesses placed him at the scene at the time of the murder and there was no other evidence linking him to the killing, states The Telegraph.  He was originally sentenced to die, but appeals and mistakes in the paperwork delayed the process.
